GKR Karate is going global with the grand opening of a brand new online training opportunity, the GKR Online Karate & Fitness Academy!

This facility has been three years in the making and was born out of the huge popularity of the online tutorials and live-streaming classes that GKR ran for its students during the COVID lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. Tetsuhiro Hokama Sensei will be conducting our second Okinawa Online seminar.

A 10th Dan in Goju-Ryu and master of Shodo (the Art of traditional Japanese calligraphy) he has dedicated much of his life to not only teaching karate but compiling and preserving its history. Few of Karate’s forefathers ever documented their studies, techniques and philosophies, and of those who did, much of this was destroyed during the severe bombings of Okinawa in WWII. Hokama Sensei spent years collecting historical items, written works and knowledge from Karate’s history, and founded the World’s only Karate Museum in Okinawa.

August 2020 was set for our next trip to Okinawa, with over 100 students from around the GKR globe looking to make the pilgrimage. Sadly, due to Covid-19, International travel has been banned to ensure public safety. As disappointing as this is, it also presents a unique opportunity.

Whilst our tourist dollars cannot help the Okinawa economy, we can at least contribute to some of the island’s karate masters. The entirety of fees for these classes goes to the instructor, helping them to keep their doors open and the art of karate alive.

As you may know, GKR Karate organises trips to Okinawa every two years. Being the birthplace of karate, multiple seminars with various masters of various traditional karate styles are organised. The aim of this, beyond the cultural experience, is to expose our students to countless principles, techniques and applications.

This year we had over 100 excited students, ready to join five Karate Masters at Naha’s Budokan in August. With the unforeseen and unprecedented lockdowns caused by COVID-19, the 2020 trip has been postponed until further notice.

As disappointing as this is, it also presents a unique opportunity! With the arrival of Zoom and live online classes, for the first time in history, students will be able to gain the rich experience of Okinawa Karate without the need to invest considerable time and money required for international travel. We have organised a number of ONLINE seminars on Sunday 21 June, with 100% of money from sales going directly to the Okinawan Masters.

Okinawa is a beautiful island which relies heavily on tourism for income. This is GKR Karate’s way of helping to minimise the financial burden that has been caused by the lockdowns, and also provides all of our students with the opportunity to learn from the Master’s wealth of experience and knowledge.

Today we’ve introduced a brand-new category to the Online Dojo – The Five Animal Styles that Influenced Karate

This video is just a snippet of a series of videos which go in-depth into each of these techniques; their footwork, physiology, tactics etc.

Shihan Anthony Ryan’s major passion in Karate has been studying the 5 major animal styles of the Fujian Province (the area that highly influenced the development of karate) and showing how they are still highly relevant to all Karate-ka today.

These five animal styles are, Tiger, White Crane, Serpent, Leopard and Dragon.

Humans have always studied and mimicked animals. Not only in Chinese Martial Arts, but almost every tribal culture in history. For example, many cultures would dress up as animals and behave like them the night before a hunt. They would do this to connect to the animal’s physical traits and spirit.

They understood that to understand an animal helps you to conquer it. This applies heavily in combat – to understand the animal you are up against helps you create a strategy to beat it.

Fighting Spirit

The old tribes-people also appreciated that even the smallest, weakest animals had incredible fighting spirit.

Where humans often froze in fear upon being attacked, sinking into a fetal position, even the smallest of animals would fight tooth and nail to the bitter end. Where a human would focus on their limitations (“I’m too small, I’m too weak”), an animal would focus on the few weapons it had at its disposal that would give it a fighting chance.

Therefore, locking into the spirit of the animal in combat meant they were stepping into a superior mindset.

What is interesting is that, despite their differences, each animal can be successful against another. This essentially gives us 5 different ways to attack, defend etc. We are able to find those techniques and tactics that better suit our body type, level of experience etc. It also gives us more options, making us less predictable in our patterns, but additionally, when one is not working, we can switch to another strategy, technique, physicality that may find success.

Animal Instincts

Because we all have a level of understanding of animals, we all immediately have a base level understanding of the topic.  For example, if you are choosing a technique from Tiger style, as you have seen tigers in documentaries, you understand that accompanying this technique must be a certain type of physicality and mindset. A low stance, graceful movement, explosive techniques and a certain level of aggression. When we tap into the right mindset and physicality, we are able to increase the chance of making these techniques work.

Finally, it keeps kumite far more enjoyable. Kumite should not be a case of, these are the two or three techniques or tactics you like, and sometimes they work and sometimes they do not. It should be an adventure, with countless ways to perform any technique.
